This town is only accessible by boat or seaplane and is located at the top of Lake Chelan. It's very rustic and beautiful, if you have time for a day trip - definitely put Stehekin on your list. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_SuMdp_4xJBs/RwfKGTrnBlI/AAAAAAAAABk/1Y9LTUuHRx4/s320/IMG_0160.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118281711241070162" />Locals know that upon arrival you can rent bicycles to explore the area, including an incredible waterfall called Rainbow Falls. On the journey to the Falls, you pass the old one-room school that's still set-up with desks and drawings from the students around the room. It's fascinating to see what things used to be like for the small population of students who live here. On the way back from the Falls, we made a quick stop for drinks and ice cream before getting back to the dock where the boat was.

If you don't want to take your own boat all the way up to Stehekin (it's a pretty long drive and usually pretty choppy waters), you can also take a more comfortable trip on the Lady of the Lake. There are two options currently based on budget and time, you can take the Lady II for $39 with a 4 hour trip or the Lady Express (or what we call, The Little Lady) for $59 with a little over 2 hour trip.

If you are looking for a view from above, seaplanes are a great way to see the beauty of the Lake from above and get to Stehekin quickly. Chelan Airways offers trips to Stehekin at $149 roundtrip or $89 for one way. They offer a variety of other flights as well that are great ways to experience all that the scenery has to offer.

Lake Chelan - eat it up!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_SuMdp_4xJBs/Rwe73zrnBhI/AAAAAAAAABE/zsglibLyyN4/s320/IMG_0124.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118266068970178066" />
Anyone who knows me well, knows that I'm a sucker for a good breakfast. So first off, I'll have to share my favorite breakfast spot - Blueberry Hills. Mentioned in my activities post, they also offer one of the most delicious breakfasts in the area. Ranging from blintzs and scrambles to their new cowboy breakfast and my personal favorite, waffles! Be sure to order bacon if you like it, theirs is super good! PS - they serve breakfast all day and also serve lunch.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_SuMdp_4xJBs/Rwe-XDrnBiI/AAAAAAAAABM/KXOsFQyu70o/s320/IMG_0172.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118268804864345634" />A trip to Chelan wouldn't be complete without a delicious meal at Campbell's. We prefer the second floor pub and veranda. It's the perfect place to sit outside and enjoy the view of the town below. Campbell's is located at the start of the main drag providing a bird's eye view. The choices on the menu are pretty standard but they are done well and Campbell's is an institution in Chelan and is one that can't be missed!
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_SuMdp_4xJBs/RwfAdDrnBjI/AAAAAAAAABU/DrnSe3YhJYY/s320/IMG_0175.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118271106966816306" />For something sweet, I have a couple of ideas. Offering great shakes, malts and frosties is Lakeview Drive In. This charming little spot is right off of the Lake and is the perfect small town dessert stop. 2007 marks their 50th Anniversary and proves how legendary it is among locals and visitors. They also offer lunch/dinner but it's a no-brainer for dessert. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_SuMdp_4xJBs/RwfBHzrnBkI/AAAAAAAAABc/aA5OVPMQZOU/s320/IMG_0167.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118271841406223938" />The other fun dessert stop offers something a bit lighter - Hawaiian Ice. There are a few of these around town so just keep an eye out for the building, it's pretty hard to miss!

Lake Chelan - so much to do, so little time

While in Chelan, there are a variety of activities to keep you busy. While I am there, I always stay in Manson, which is about 7 miles east of Chelan on the Lake. Whether you are right in Chelan or in one of the smaller towns around the Lake, there are plenty of things to entertain you while you're there.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_SuMdp_4xJBs/RseBDoL6A0I/AAAAAAAAAA0/sjtUgTO9Nvs/s320/IMG_0152.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5100187002347324226" />First off, I have to mention the water activities. When you go, I HIGHLY recommend renting a boat. The Lake is so fun to explore and is so vast that without a boat you'll never get the full experience. My personal favorite is to motor out to a nice sunny spot in the middle of the Lake and park - then you can lay out, swim, play games, drink, eat, you get the idea. Aside from my lazy days, you can also wakeboard/water ski, tube, parasail, rent jet skis, go fishing, the list goes on. And before I move on from water activities, I have to mention the areas near Chelan that have fun amusement parks on the water - they are giant blow-up toys that live on the Lake and look like they could be a blast for the younger kids in your group. There is also a waterpark called Slidewaters that has a variety of fun activities for a family-style trip.

Aside from all of the fun you can have on the water, my next pick would be to check out some of the wineries. Over the years, Chelan has grown to be quite the wine country and my favorite is Wapato Point Cellars. On this visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Mama Carol and she was just as sweet as she could be. If you go, definitely ask for her. :) The winery does tastings starting at noon daily and they are complimentary. The bottles are pretty reasonable ranging from around $15-$30 and glasses starting at only $5. They also have a great little restaurant (Winemaker's Grill) on the property and during our tasting I discovered that if you buy a case, you receive a free dinner for two! Dinner begins serving at 5 p.m. If you'd like to check out the rest of the wineries in the area, click HERE

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_SuMdp_4xJBs/RseCA4L6A1I/AAAAAAAAAA8/g8lxV9-xj84/s320/IMG_0120.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5100188054614311762" />If you are still looking for something different than what is mentioned above, maybe you would be interested in exploring the orchards. Chelan is known for it's soil and all of the wonderful food that is able to be grown there. I will come back to this spot when I go over places to eat but for now, let's talk about their berry farm. Blueberry Hills is a fantastic little family homestead that has a restaurant and also a u-pick berry farm. You can choose from blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. They are all delicious and it's the kind of experience that is only found in small towns - which I personally don't get to enjoy often enough. So do me a favor and check this place out while you're there! :)

Lake Chelan - the lay of the land

I always stay at the home of my boyfriend's parents but if you aren't able to rent a house on the lake, I have a few options that may work. First off, Campbell's is probably the most popular spot in town. The resort offers excellent views of the Lake, a full-service spa, sandy beach, pools, rentals for the Lake, etc. They also have rooms that are equipped with a full kitchen, cozy fireplaces and soaking tubs.

For a more intimate stay, check out Watson's Harverene Resort on the south shore of the Lake. It's been in the same family for 4 generations and is definitely a more low-key location than some of the others on the Lake. The Resort has a heated pool and hot tub, as well as its own beach. You can choose from family cottages or poolside units - all have a kitchen and one unit is large enough to sleep up to 10 people. The best part about this spot is that the resort offers guests a short sightseeing trip on their yacht for free! They also offer rentals for the Lake and have been known to have many repeat guests throughout the years. PS - this is also one of the spots on the Lake that has a gas pump so it's always good to know where it is in case you're running low!

For a comparison, the other spot on the Lake that I would recommend checking out is Wapato Point on the north shore. This location has many different resorts and hotels (and homes) and is very popular with visitors. If you're interested, click here to start the search.

Lake Chelan - can this be real?

Thank you to everyone for your inquiries, I should have posted that I would be out exploring my August destination and wouldn't be back until now. Thanks for hanging in there...without further ado, I am thrilled to share with you - Lake Chelan, Washington!

Undiscovered by many, Lake Chelan (pron. Shell-Ann) is one of the most pristine and awe-inspiring places I've ever traveled. I've had the pleasure of visiting a few times (thanks to my boyfriend's family who has a summer home there) and I must confess that I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to experience this place. It's located on the eastern side of Washington state and is about a 3-hour drive (depending on how fast you go) from Seattle.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_SuMdp_4xJBs/RsU7N4L6AyI/AAAAAAAAAAk/6GPWY0EIHFg/s320/IMG_0097.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099547262673617698" />The lake is glacier fed which explains why it's so crystal clear and refreshing. It's also one of the deepest in the nation, third to be exact. The lake itself is about 50 miles long and I'll expand more on my trip up the lake to Stehekin in a later post, but trust me, it's a looong drive. :) Offering a variety of water sports, delicious local produce (blueberries and blackberries are especially popular), fun souvenir shops and fabulous wineries, Chelan has more than enough to entertain anyone's taste. More to come!!

South Lake Tahoe - Mmm Mmm Good

Sorry for the delay in posting - I was in Vegas and we all know how that goes! So...back to Tahoe. My personal preference when traveling is to find locally-owned restaurants that you can't experience anywhere else. Chains are nice for when you are starving and in desperate need of food right away but if there's time to look around or plan a little, I always go for the local flair. I have included some highlights below and even threw in one on the North shore of the Lake for good measure (thanks Kell!). If you've ever been to any of these or know of some others that are worth checking out - definitely leave a comment!

First one that I must mention is Izzy's Burger Spa (2591 Lake Tahoe Blvd/US Route 50)...I know what you're thinking, spa?? But yes, that's the real name and no, there is no spa in sight. But when the burgers are this good, nobody ever argues! They specialize in delicious burgers that are made to order with toppings as simple as cheese or as complex as teriyaki with a pineapple slice on top! FYI - If you hit Izzy's during peak hours, be prepared for a bit of a wait.

For a little romance, head to Cafe Fiore. The restaurant is small (under 10 tables) and very intimate, perfect for some alone time. I would sit outside if you have the option. The menu features a mixture of classics and unusual dishes that you aren't likely to find. They have a vast wine list and if you go to the Web site, you can search the wine selections with an interactive system. That way, you can check to see if your favorite wine is available for you and your sweetheart!

Evan's American Gourmet Cafe is another small restaurant located in a cozy home and serves up an excellent selection of upscale American cuisine. It's a little farther than some of the other locations but definitely worth the effort. Evan's is owned by a darling couple and they also own The Cantina (another on my list). Check out their Web site, I especially like the "map" link with directions from London. :)

If you are craving Mexican - head over to The Cantina for a delicious margarita and some authentic Mexican favorites. They have numerous accolades and specials Tuesdays-Fridays. Additionally for you beer lovers, there are 30 beers to choose from with 16 on tap!

You can't leave Tahoe without a little seafood and the best place I experienced was The Fresh Ketch which is located right on the Lake (and voted best seafood by Tahoe locals). We had a lovely cruise on the lake after the wedding and stopped here for dinner. They offer a variety of dishes so even a seafood beginner can find something tasty. And I must say, if you like oysters, definitely get "Oysters on the Half Shell" YUM! And if you are there on a Tuesday - they are only $1.25. They have specials each day of the week so be sure to check before heading over if you are interested in getting a deal.

And lastly, Ernie's Coffee Shop - the staple of good ole' fashioned American classics. The food is as good as home cooked, very reasonably priced and the service is with a smile. And rumor has it that the gas station next door is the cheapest in town - never hurts to check that out while you're there!

**For the North Lake Tahoe visitor - check out Gar Woods Grill and Pier Restaurant on the North Shore. A good friend of mine tells me there is patio seating with a great view and a potent daquiri drink called the Wet Woody. She claims is delicious but warns that it's "guaranteed hangover material!" So...enjoy at your own risk!

It's a Deal!

How fitting that a Lake Tahoe deal was delivered right to my inbox today...Travelocity is advertising rates for Tahoe on flights, hotels and activities. United Airlines is having a fantastic "Coast to Coast" sale. I've included the link below for you to check out. The rates start at $99 each way but the flights are across the country - it's really hard to find deals like this when you are trying to travel from one coast to the other! The travel must take place between Aug 16 and Jan 11 of next year.

The catch is the best deals are on Tues/Wed/Sat and be mindful that there are some blackout dates...but if you find what you are looking for, book it and enjoy the savings! :) If you're interested, click HERE!

South Lake Tahoe - home sweet home

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_SuMdp_4xJBs/RpqQPFlzEpI/AAAAAAAAAAU/DAiRT9ZnjhA/s320/tahoe+house.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5087537317941547666" />Although I know there are a variety of hotels to stay at and I'm sure that they are very nice...I stayed in a house and would highly recommend it if it's possible for you. It's really great to be able to have a kitchen and lots of space. Plus, you get incredible views of the Lake and have a chance to meet your neighbors - which in some cases end up being locals who can point you in the right direction of great places to eat and sights to see. We used Accommodation Station Rentals to search for the houses we stayed in. They have a huge variety of sizes and locations - we were very pleased with our options. The house I stayed at for the majority of the trip was located on Heavenly Mountain with 3 levels, 2 decks both with views of the Lake, a pool table, an old school Pacman game, tons of DVDs, a porch swing and a hot tub. It was wonderful!

If you decide against renting a house (too short of a visit, not enough people, etc.) then I would suggest looking into the hotel below as an option for your trip.

Forest Suites Resort - they are located on Heavenly and are pretty reasonable, it was $106/night when I checked the site but you may even find cheaper rates on the discount travel sites. They also have "Special Offers" on their homepage so be sure to check that too!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_SuMdp_4xJBs/RpqRgVlzEqI/AAAAAAAAAAc/RzTSN09YfLM/s320/View+from+deck.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5087538713805918882" />And I couldn't help but include this link that I came across. It seems a little more budget friendly for rentals and if you can swing it, it's worth it! Lake Village Resort - they have a big selection of condos, townhomes and cabins available as rentals and the prices are extremely reasonable - starting as low as $139/night. How can you beat that? :)

South Lake Tahoe - take it all in

Sorry for the delay in posts everyone - I was in South Lake Tahoe this past weekend for my cousin Jay's wedding. Congrats Jay and Jen! xoxo While there, I figured it would be the perfect opportunity to do some research and use it as my next destination. The weather was amazing and the Lake truly takes your breath away when you see it for the first time. Although I wasn't able to see and try out as many places as I had hoped, I got in a lot of research and am already trying to find time to go back!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_SuMdp_4xJBs/RpqHKllzEoI/AAAAAAAAAAM/hvRp3L-1lxY/s320/Tahoe+sunset.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5087527345027486338" />I flew into the Reno/Tahoe International Airport and it's about an hour to an hour and a half from the airport to South Lake Tahoe. I would recommend renting a car either at the airport (the drive is beautiful as you get closer) or take a shuttle (like the South Tahoe Express) and rent a car once you arrive in town. Either way, you'll need some sort of transportation to get around while there since it's a small city and doesn't have advanced public transportation. Additionally, since it's a tourist town, do your best to pack everything you'll need (other than groceries, etc.) because it can be a bit pricey. :)

Napa Valley - hints and tips

My last little bits will hopefully help to make your trip a little easier, a little more enjoyable and very memorable.

Visit mid-week. There's a lot less traffic and some hotels have lower rates which means more money for food, wine and fun activities.

Speaking of food, wine and fun activities...my idea of a perfect fit would be dining at French Laundry or one of the other fine restaurants in the area. If you don't have a reservation and decide on a whim (sounds familiar), head over and prepare to wait - most likely, they'll fit you in. But don't quote me on that, always have a back-up just in case! :)

Try using Silverado Trail as your north-south driving route. It's more scenic and less crowded.

Rutherford Hill Winery's picnic area has a great view, and is nearly empty when picnic areas on the main highway are packed. My ideal picnic? ***Baguette, at least 3 cheeses, fresh fruit and of course, a great bottle of wine*** As a courtesy to the winery, buy a bottle of wine from them to enjoy with your picnic (they'll open it for you if you don't have an opener).

By the way, a great place for picnic goods is Sunshine Market on Main Street in St. Helena (pronounced Hel-EE-na) which is about 30 minutes north of Napa. You'll find an excellent selection of cheeses, fruits and baked goods. Don't forget to grab napkins and utensils while you're there.

While in St. Helena, check out Steve's Hardware for fun kitchen tools and gadgets ranging from tiny tart pans to the biggest wooden spoons you've seen in real life - I'm talking Harry Potter movie style.

PS - If you're near Yountville in the morning (about half way between Napa and St. Helena), stop by Gordon's for coffee with the locals...it's a great way to learn more fun secrets of the area.

Napa Valley - more than just wine

If you've exhausted yourself with the wineries, there are plenty of other fun activities to check out while in the area.

I mentioned COPIA in an earlier post and it's a must see! It's the perfect place to learn about the area and have the chance to mingle with other visitors and experts. COPIA is a non-profit that began in 2003 offering a variety of things to explore including art exhibitions, edible organic gardens, films, concerts, etc. Whether you're a home cook or a gourmet chef, a wine novice or connoisseur - there's something here for everyone. Oh...and if you have time to stay for a bite, Julia's Kitchen is a must (that's Julia, as in Julia Child...now you see what I mean!).

Another way to experience the area and still get out and active is through a bike tour. Check out Wine Country Bikes located outside of Napa in Healdsburg for a variety of tour options and get a chance to see wine country in a whole new way!

If you have the chance, there are hot springs in Calistoga and I found a great deal on mud baths. These are so fun for a group and romantic for couples. Click here to check out the deals at Golden Haven Hot Springs Spa & Resort.

Last but not least, another tasting. But wait, it's not what you think! Try an olive oil tasting - thanks to Giada and her latest travel show, I learned about Round Pond Vineyard which offers olive oil tastings and it looked so fun...and yummy too! The vineyard is located about 14 miles north of Napa so keep that in mind when planning your travels. I have this one on my personal list for my next trip. It's the wannabe foodie in me. :)

PS - thanks Kell for the tip on Giada's show, it definitely came in handy!

Napa Valley - you take a napa, you don't move to Napa!

It's not easy to find an affordable place to stay in Napa, so here are my thoughts:

Now of course, if you're really on a budget you can look to the chains like Best Western, etc. And honestly, if that makes it easier for you to be able to spend more money on the enjoyment of the trip itself (wine tours, tastings, nice meals) then by all means, splurge where you will get the most out of it! :) Personally, I wanted the full overall experience so my recommendations are a variety of options on the lower end of the pay scale - because believe me, you can spend a fortune on a BEAUTIFUL room or you can look to the list below for some great choices that won't break the bank.

Old World Inn has gotten rave reviews from both the media and past guests. It's a darling bed & breakfast located in Downtown Napa within walking distance to the shops, restaurants, COPIA (The American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts) and the fabulous Wine Train. The rooms start at $139/night which is an amazing deal considering all of the amenities and the location. Be sure to check the Web site, they have great specials!

Wine Valley Lodge is slightly outside of Downtown Napa but it's a great deal and close enough that you can still experience the town - a few blocks farther than Old World Inn. The rooms are rather bland and simple but if you are just viewing it as a place to stay, you will be just fine. It's set up like the old motels where it's all one level and the rooms open up to the pool. The rates are really reasonable, I just checked Expedia and it was only $80/night.

For those who plan to be more in the Sonoma area, check out Sonoma Creek Inn, the rates are as low as $79 in the low season...what a steal!

And just for fun...if you have a group - De Mar House is so charming, I just couldn't resist. It's an adorable Victorian home located in Old Town Napa. It has 3 bedroom suites and rents out the entire home for groups. It holds up to 8 people so it's perfect for a bachelorette party or weekend wine tour. And to give you an idea, it's only $525 per night for 8 people on a weekend night (the higher priced nights) - that's a GREAT deal when you break it out per person. :) Hint to my girlfriends...feel free to organize one of your bachelorette parties or a girls weekend there - I'll be sure to be the first to reply YES.

Napa Valley - just a little taste

When you go, I would suggest planning ahead of time for what kind of trip you'd like. For example - is this a learning trip? Do you want to understand how wine is made and learn about the different scents and tastes of different wines? Is this a trip devoted to specific wineries? Are there some that are on a "these are my favorites" list that you MUST visit? Are you a fan of only white wines or only red wines? Or...is this a casual wine tasting? For me, I'm all about the casual so I chose to look for good deals on tastings and spend a little extra money on travel so I can enjoy the wine and not be concerned about the ability to drive later. :)
Since the trip can be pricey, I look for free tastings (very hard to come by) which are listed below. I've also included a few that aren't free but pretty close.

Downtown Napa wine tasting - "almost free" just buy a Taste Napa Downtown card for $20, it allows you to taste at any of the ten downtown Napa tasting rooms for only 10 cents a glass

Rombauer Vineyards - it's free but I know a few people that have visited and had a very difficult time leaving without at least a bottle...PS try to visit on a weekday since weekends can be very busy

V. Sattui - the tasting is free but it can be very busy...go figure!

Sequoia Grove - now...even though you didn't technically visit the site, I will pass on the knowledge that if you mention you saw a "Two For One Tasting" offer on winecountry.com - you can enjoy a bit of a nice discount

Robert Mondavi - along the same lines as above, here's a coupon for two for one

Hess Collection - another two for one!

Chandon - one last two for one, just click here

Another good tip is if you choose to go to a winery that does cost a bit more - buy one glass and share. :)

Napa Valley - hello wine country!

I would say that this location needs no introduction and is one that I'm thrilled to be writing about since I've grown to really appreciate and enjoy wine over the years. Located north of San Francisco and the Bay area - depending on where you fly in and are driving from, it can be 1-2 hours. When booking a flight, check the airports in San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento and Oakland. The fastest drive is from Oakland or Sacramento.

Even if you don't know anything about wine or aren't a huge wine fan, the scenery is gorgeous and is an ideal getaway that feels like you're in another country with the convenience of a (hopefully) affordable flight. Be sure to check the weather for the time of year you are planning to visit - the temps dip to the 50s and 60s in the winter months and reach into the 80s during the summer months.

Rocky Point - learn from experience

After many visits to RP, I've learned a few things along the way that I thought I'd share with you. First off, if you drive...stop by Vazquez (a large store on your left on your way through town). You can stock up on supplies such as tequila, mixers, snacks, etc. Plus, there is a GREAT little taco stand - emphasis on little - that is located in a parking space right in front of Vazquez and is always busy with both locals and those in the know. Additionally, there is a family-run shop next door (actually 2 doors down) that makes the best homemade tortillas in...well, probably the entire country of Mexico - I'm telling you, they are delicious. You will undoubtedly will see the little old lady that runs it and she doesn't speak a lick of English.

I will assume that at some point you will be in a car and if not, it's still useful advice for any time you are traveling through Mexico. Beware of the Policia - they really do pull you over for anything (especially if you look like a tourist) and they really will haul you to jail. If that is the case, do EVERYTHING you can to avoid it and yes, they really do take bribes. I pray that you don't ever have to find out but it's always good to know...just in case.

My last little tidbit is a reminder that due to the stricter policies that are being enforced - you now need a passport to fly there and starting at the beginning of 2008, you'll need a passport to drive across the border. So be sure you have one and it's not expired! :)

Rocky Point - sun and sand

First off - Happy Birthday Mom! I hope you have a wonderful day and I'm thrilled that I'm able to spend it with you.

So, while in RP there are many activities that are available if you are seeking more than just sunbathing and lounging. I usually do just that but I have done most of the activities below on one trip down there or another and they are always very fun.

The activities won't come as a huge surprise - there's parasailing and like every vacation spot on the water, they have banana boats...just be careful to pay attention, my friend Kirsten got caught in the rope last year and she isn't too anxious to get back on the banana any time soon. :)

Land activities include sand volleyball which is always a fun way to meet other visitors. You can also rent ATVs and roll out onto the dunes - but if you've never done it, just be prepared that your hands will be very sore the next day from holding on! And pulled straight out of a romance novel - you can horseback ride on the beach. And even though I have no idea what the name of this activity is...they have a flying dune buggy looking contraption that seems a bit like a death wish but it's always fascinated me - so if you happen to be down there and are feeling lucky, let me know how it goes! :)

The last activity that I would highly recommend is to head into town and do a little <del> haggling </del> shopping. You can find pretty much any chotchke you can think of and some really fun souvenirs. The last time I went, I brought back a beer holster for my boyfriend...yes, you read that correctly - beer holster. It's made of leather and has the emblem of the beer of your choice and it attaches to any belt. My point is, they have everything! Brush up on your negotiation skills and never take the first price! PS - you can always find fresh shrimp and I highly recommend buying some to bring home...yum!

Rocky Point - siesta time

Now that you're craving some authentic Mexican cuisine...it's only fair that I tell you where to stay so you can book your trip ASAP. :) There are many options as Rocky Point is becoming more known but I always go back to the tried and true. Usually I stay on the Sandy Beach side in a condo - it offers the perks of a kitchen, pool, hot tub and it's right on the beach.

There's a grouping of condo rentals that I can personally recommend - Sonoran Sea, Sonoran Spa, Sonoran Sun and Princessa. They are all located next to one another and are similar in what they offer. Each condo (you can choose from 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms) is independently owned but the complex takes care of renting them out. They are all decorated very well and have all of the comforts of home - and by comforts I'm referring to a blender and wine opener. :) But seriously, they are fully equipped with everything you'll need for your trip, so much so that you'll never want to leave. Each complex has its own benefits.

For example, Sonoran Sea has 3 pools to choose from with one offering a swim-up bar. Additionally, the bartenders are friendly and love their jobs and will play any music you want which blasts to the entire pool...talk about party!

On the other hand, Princessa has a large beach area with palapas for sun worshipers and they are located within steps of the water.

If you recall from my food posting, I also mentioned Playa Bonita. If you are looking for a hotel option in the area, then this would be my recommendation. I, personally would go with a condo but this hotel is a great option for those not wanting/needing a condo. If you have a larger group - then definitely look into renting a house...the best ones are on the Las Conchas side...although there are a few on the Sandy Beach side. Just be sure to really research it to make sure you know exactly what you are getting! :)

It's a Deal!

If you've ever wanted to visit Hawaii - this may be just the opportunity! Right now Pride of Aloha (NCL) is sailing Sept. 9 and 19 for just $999 including airfare (oceanview from $1,099)! It's a 10 night inter-island cruise with air, transfers and an onboard coupon booklet. It doesn't get much better than that! The ports visited are Honolulu, Maui (Kahului), Hilo, Kauai, South coast of Molokai, Maui (Lahaina) and Kona. To top it off, cruisers get over 100 hours to spend on shore in the ports! Keep in mind, this is NCL so it's Freestyle Cruising = there are no fixed times for meals, dress is casual and you can pretty much do whatever you want. I mentioned onboard credit - the first 50 cabins receive the booklet. So if you're interested...better act fast!

Ready to book it? I know many people get leery of "little taco stands" but I can tell you that if you know where to go, you'll never find food that can compare. Here are my choices of where to go - there are actually quite a few options but after exploring many, I have narrowed it down...it was tough research! :)

The Point - by far one of the coolest places in Rocky Point because it's built over the water and on, well...stilts. It's at the point of the beach separating Sandy Beach from Las Conchas and can be seen from pretty much anywhere along the water. One of my favorite things is to go there, order a margarita (they are the size of your head) and an American shrimp cocktail - if you don't say "American" it will be the Mexican version which is more like a ceviche - then sit, relax and look out at the water.

Playa Bonita - my favorite happy hour spot. It's right on the beach and is the perfect location to watch the sunset while enjoying delicious food and festive music. Technically there is a restaurant and hotel - both are great but the restaurant is where I typically go and the patio is vast with plenty of room for everyone to enjoy a little fiesta!

La Curva - this is a fairly new one for me that I came across on this trip, thanks to my friend Ali. She and her family have been going down to RP for years and she's definitely someone I trust when it comes to finding the right places to eat! La Curva is ideal for breakfast - it's traditional, the menu is broken English and varied Spanish and the food is excellent! They serve warm tortillas alongside your meal and they are buttery and delicious. As you can see on the sign, they cater to Americans - I laughed when I saw "Mexican USA food."

Manny's - now this one I would recommend for daytime only unless you are looking for a dance party. After the sun goes down, Manny's is the hottest ticket in town, blasting <del>The Humpty Dance</del> every obnoxious American song known to man. Now...don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I haven't partaken in the past but most people enjoy the more relaxing moments in Rocky Point so I wanted to at least spell out what to expect.

Casa del Capitan - I wanted to include one spot for the lovebirds. This is the most expensive on my list and if you are looking for a romantic locale, this place should definitely be on your list. It's located at the top of the highest hill in town and overlooks the water - sunsets are gorgeous. They offer both seafood and Mexican fare and typically there is live music.

PS - Happy Mother's Day to all of you wonderful Moms out there :)

It's a Deal!

For those who love cruises - and yes, that would be me! Although it's more of an American holiday than Mexican, I thought it was a fun coincidence that this post falls in line. Most people believe it's the Mexican Independence Day but it's actually the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla against the French. The real Independence Day is September 16...just a little random fact for ya. :)

So anyway...On to Rocky Point! Typically my trip to Rocky Point is with my best girlfriends and is an annual event in November...but this year three (out of the regular four) of us decided to make another trip in May - we needed a quick getaway! For those who aren't familiar - Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) is located in Mexico along the Gulf of California (specifically the Sea of Cortez) - about a 4 hour drive from Phoenix, Arizona.

Primarily Rocky Point is known as a spring break spot for people in the Southwest but it's also an incredibly beautiful vacation spot that is surprisingly not super touristy for most of the year. If you avoid holiday weekends (I should take my own advice!) and spring break, you can get some incredible deals and enjoy some quality beach time.

Siesta Key - take it from me

Now most tourists head straight to Sandy Beach - which I love, but the locals know to go to the numbered beach access areas since they aren't nearly as crowded - it's best if you can walk or bike to them (parking is scarce). You can enjoy seven nights at the resort of your choice in the city of your choice starting at just $735 with hotel and air packages or from $529 with non-inclusive...so if you have a buddy pass or airline miles to redeem - now is a great time!

The deal: Liberty Travel has come out with its annual "Mexico Extravaganza," offering reduced prices on air-inclusive packages to more than 145 three-, four- and five-star resorts and hotels all over Mexico. The sale rates are good for trips taken from April 25 through December 20, but they must be booked no later than May 7. For example, a seven-night package from Miami to the NH Krystal Resort in Cancun starts at $529 per person, double from Miami, $625 from New York or $659 from Chicago for June departures—and as a bonus, kids stay and eat free at the hotel. Prefer an all-inclusive property? Package rates for the Grand Oasis in Cancun start at $735 from Miami, $825 from New York or $865 form Chicago—and again, kids stay and eat free.

Need more info? I can't imagine staying in a hotel while on the island, there's so many great rentals with incredible locations and amenities - it seems silly not to take advantage of it. Plus, rentals allow you to visit the local farmer's market, etc. and stock up on food for while you're there, saving your money for fun nights out and activities while out exploring the island.

One place that my family has visited for many years is Gulf & Bay Club, located right on the beach (Gulf side - my preference) and not to be confused with Gulf & Bay Bayside. Now the main site requests a minimum of one month rentals but you can find many independent options by owners that are for less time. It's definitely not cheap but I can't say that there's anywhere that's super cheap on the island - this is more of a splurge option or go in on a house with a group of people a block inland to save a few dollars.

On that note, I know of a fantastic home a couple of blocks from the beach that is owned by a great couple. It's beautifully decorated, two bedrooms but sleeps 6, has a pool, hot tub, lanai, pass through bar area for relaxing meals on the screened patio and all the comforts of home. If you are interested in looking into this option, click HERE.

No matter where you choose to "hit the hay" you'll get a peaceful sleep and wake up to the sound of birds and rolling waves, I can't think of a better way to wake up! There are many rental options on the island and even though I didn't touch on any hotels, there are those as well. Additionally, if you want to save some money overall - look into staying in Sarasota and just driving over the bridge to Siesta Key and spend your days on the island and use your room as just the place you sleep. :)

Siesta Key - fun in the sun

Now I have to say from my own personal experience, I typically don't do much in terms of activities while I'm there.

Siesta Key - Day in the life of Melanie:
1. Wake up
2. Breakfast on the lanai or patio
3. Head to beach with munchies and drinks
(time lapse of 6-8 hours)
4. Dinner at home or in the Village
5. Night swim in the pool
Repeat :)

So...I'll do my best to describe the activities that are available - which is pretty much anything you can do in an island atmosphere. Aside from laying on the beach (which is now established as being my favorite activity), there's also a few others to explore. I'll break them up into Sand, Water and City.

Sand - probably one of the most popular pastimes is shell collecting. I've found huge sand dollars completely in tact, those cute little curly-que ones, large iridescent ones, you name it. The best place to hunt for shells is Turtle Beach - it was recently restored after suffering from some erosion issues so it should be back to top shape. Aside from shells, there's beach volleyball and sand castles (there are amazing artists that participate in the annual competition in early May each year - it's unbelievable).

Water - there's pretty much an endless amount of water sports and activities. Including jet skis, boats, parasailing, sailing, fishing, snorkeling, etc. I could go on to name every...single...one but I think you get the point. :)

City - there are tons of great little boutiques all over the island that are very fun to browse and bring home souvenirs. Additionally, another great shopping spot is St. Armand's Circle on Lido Key (pron. lee-doe). You'll find a variety of upscale shops and cafes, it's a great place to visit if you're looking for some real shopping. And I can't talk about activities without mentioning the Mote Marine Aquarium. It features sea life found off Florida's coast, but it also serves as a research facility and you can even tour the laboratory! You'll find sharks, sea turtles, dolphins, sting rays (that you can touch), eels and manatees (my favorite).

**Off Topic**

So I planned to stick with just travel but realized that there will be times where I'll want to discuss new finds that are outside of the travel realm - it will be few and far between and will always be labled as "**Off Topic** so readers can skip through if it's not of interest. :)

I have to gush about this fantastic little site that I absolutely adore! Guys - you can probably skip this post. ;) If you haven't visited <a href="http://www.weddingbee.com"target="_blank">www.weddingbee.com - it's time. Now...I should probably let you know that it's a blog site and it's real-life brides-to-be who blog about the months leading up to their weddings.

Although I'm not getting married any time soon and am not pushing for it, I did have a very girly moment when I came across this darling site. I had originally set out to look up a designer I had seen on (embarrassingly) Oprah. It was a wedding dress episode and the gown from this designer was beautiful and being curious (and slightly obsessive at times), I felt the need to research it a bit. I went online and upon Googling the designer, found her Web site. I proceeded to look through the photos of the dresses, oohing and ahhing...until...I came across the most beautiful dress I've ever seen. It had my name written all over it. And mind you, I am somewhat girly but I've never been one of those girls who's thought about and planned my wedding all of my life so...this was quite a moment for me.

Anyway, once I found this beautiful specimen of a gown, I had to Google it and see if there were any additional pictures of it that I could sit and drool over. Not much came up but I did come across a photo of the back of the dress which I clicked the link to get the entire thing...leading me to Wedding Bee!

I looked throughout the Weddingbee site and am now a devotee logging on a few times a week to see what all of the busy bees are up to. It's one of the best times of the year for weather (warm but not humid!) and there's so much to see and do. The streets are closed off and merchants come from all over the nation to provide arts, crafts, food, etc. It's fun to see the people in the streets, kids with ice cream cones - it almost has the feel of what life was like 50 years ago.

Speaking of - my pick for ice cream (where my family ALWAYS goes) is Big Olaf's. And while we're on the subject of recommendations...my Grammie's favorite restaurant was definitely The Flying Bridge (which is unfortunately closed now) but she also loves The Broken Egg. She's been going down there for at least 20 years now for a few months out of the year and has the experience to know the good spots. I would also recommend making a stop at the places below, they are all well-known on the island and will provide you with a truly authentic experience while you visit this fantastic slice of paradise.

Daiquiri Deck - great bar in the Village

Old Salty Dog - local Siesta Key favorite

<a href="http://www.skob.com/" target=_"blank">SKOB - excellent seafood, especially if you like oysters!

Phillippi Creek - very old Florida feel and famous for its steamer pots

<a href="http://www.turtlesrestaurant.com/home.html" target=_"blank">Turtles - located right on Little Sarasota Bay offering somewhat pricier menu items but the atmosphere and food are worth it! If you are looking for a bit more reasonable, head over for happy hour - reduced pricing. :)

Siesta Key - all in the family

My family has vacationed in Siesta Key, FL since I was born. It has one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. It's always ranked in the top 10 beaches of the world and is known for it's white sand - which is cool to the touch and a gorgeous compliment to the blue/green water.

For reference, it's not part of the Keys that most people travel to - Siesta Key is up near Sarasota and the airport is right there! For those looking for flight options - there are many other airports within a couple of hours driving distance that could prove to be cheaper plane tickets since Sarasota/Bradenton (SRQ) can be on the pricier side.

Siesta Key is one that has gained in popularity over the years but the best part about this island is how all of the residents are dedicated to keeping it from becoming over-commercialized. Everyone works to keep the beaches pristine and tries hard to keep the island as close to a "small-town" feel as possible. The charm is what keeps visitors coming back year after year.

Holbox Island - in the know

Here are some tips for your next trip to this fantastic little paradise.

Low season
-May and June
-October and November

Mid season
-Mid-January-March
-December
-September

High season
-Holidays (end of December/beginning of January)
-April
-July and August

Also important to point out, there are no rocks on the island (no wonder everyone is barefoot!). Shells are in abundance and if you are a shell collector or admirer, there are many unusual finds on the beach.

If you rent a golf cart to get around on the island, don't be surprised if you come across a Bassett Hound. His name is "Maclovio" and he's very friendly - he may even hop in the cart for a ride. :)

PS-There aren't any banks or ATMs on the island so bring dollars or pesos

It's a Deal!

For those financial savvy (or not so savvy) travelers, guru Suze Orman will be handing out valuable tips while cruising aboard the Costa Fortuna this December. They also have live music every night!

Edelin Pizza - located in the main plaza in downtown Holbox, open for lunch and dinner and famous for serving a wide variety of pizzas, pastas and Mexican dishes. Be sure to try one of their special house pizzas: lobster, shrimp or tuna.

Maresa Ice Cream - for 20 years, the Escalante family has made the most delicious and famous ice cream on Holbox Island. But there are enough options to keep you busy especially if you take time to enjoy the beautiful beaches!

If you are looking for a little adventure to spice up your relaxing trip, a whale shark tour is the best way to go. Whale sharks are the largest living fish species and feed primarily on plankton, algae and krill. Despite the word "shark" in their name, they pose little to no threat to humans and are historically welcoming to divers and have been known to be playful. This opportunity is available from June to September while the whale sharks enjoy the warm waters near Holbox. Most tours last approximately 5 hours and cost around $75-$85 per person.

Isla Pajaros "Bird Island" is another popular attraction for visitors to Holbox. The island is located about 30 minutes from Holbox by boat and is home to over 150 different bird species (PS - the island is only 200 feet wide!). To protect the fragile ecosystem, no humans are allowed to walk on the island but you can observe these birds in their natural habitat from viewing terraces and walkways that protect the birds and keep them safe. With the abundant amount of species that visit and live on the island, you can see birds nesting and mothers feeding their young at almost any time of the year. If you are a flamingo fan (I happen to know one), you'll want to mark your trip to fall between April and October. While flamingos typically feed on brine shrimp (which is how they achieve that beautiful pink/red color), when they are on Isla Pajaros, they enjoy little red crabs which continue to enhance their colorful feathers. The island is also home to iguanas, snakes and crabs (that have been living on this planet since the time of dinosaurs), in addition to a variety of plant life including cacti, mangroves and wild orchids. If you have the chance, sunset is the best time of the day to visit when all of the species in residence flock back to the island to roost. :)

Another great option, for those who want to see Isla Pajaros but not spend a full trip just there - check out a Holbox Island tour. It sounds straight-forward enough but really, you get to enjoy a variety of what the island has to offer - all in one trip. This boat tour will take you to Isla Pajaros for some time with our feathered friends and then you will be brought to the Yalahao Lagoon, where you can swim in the crystal waters of the natural spring (you can also snorkel if you bring your own equipment). The tour will conclude at Isla Pasion, where you can enjoy the virgin sandy beaches, tranquil water and listen to the rustle of the palm trees in the wind. What better way to end the day? :) By the way, when the boat takes you back to Holbox, you will pass through an ocean channel - it's not uncommon for you to see large pods of dolphins swimming in the channel and the island's fishermen at work. These tours run around $20-$25 per person.

Addiitonal activities include:

Deep sea fishing tours

Crocodile tours

Chichen Itza ruins

Snorkeling tours

Horseback riding

Holbox Island - give it a rest

Since this location is (luckily) still relatively unknown to tourists, the accommodations are pretty reasonable. The best places on the island run between $100 to $275 for the nicest rooms (depending on the time year). I happened to also come across a nice, little find where rooms range from $50 to $180 so it's a considerable savings.

The hotel I'm referring to, or I should say "hotelito" is Casa Las Tortugas. It was originally run by a mother (Greta) and daughter (Francesca) who moved to the island from Italy but is now run by the daughter and her fiance. My descriptions will never do it justice but I can say that it's definitely worth consideration for a reasonable price and great location! They offer rooms ranging from doubles all the way up to bungalows in ancient Mayan tradition featuring wooden supports and woven thatch roofs. One of the best parts - upon request, they offer A/C (which is rare among the island hotels, usually it's just ceiling fans). Especially with this being a low-priced location, it's a definite perk! I really urge you to check out the site, it's the most charming little place and I can't imagine anyone having an experience that's anything but wonderful.

Additional accommodations are included on the list below, and if you are looking for more feedback, visit Trip Advisor.

Hotel Posada Mawimbi

Villa Los Mapaches

Villas Paraiso del Mar

Villas Delfines

Hotel Faro Viejo

Holbox Island - hola

Ok...don't tell too many people but I have found a little island paradise - in Mexico of all places. This small island NW of Cancun is perfect for a getaway from it all. It has yet to be discovered by the masses and I encourage you to keep it our little secret if you have the chance to visit! :)

Holbox Island (pron. hole-bosh) is 26 miles long and accessible (by flying) through the main areas of Playa del Carmen and Cancun. You can also take a ferry or rent a boat from Chiquila (about 2.5 hours from Cancun). There are no cars on the island but you are able to rent golf carts, bikes and scooters once you arrive.

Locals make their living primarily on fishing and it's not unusual to witness the catch of the day making its way through the village. The streets are made of white sand and it's a nice separation from the bustle of everyday life. It truly is an island retreat!

Bora Bora - insider tips

I thought it would be a good idea to share a few of the local customs - they are unique and interesting! :)

In the late afternoons during the hotter season, you may see smoke on the motus (small islands surrounding Bora Bora) and on the island itself. Locals burn coconut shells to chase away the mosquitos at night.

While touring the island you may see palm trees with metal rings around them - it's to keep the rats from getting to the coconuts. :)

And probably the most interesting of all - tiare flowers. When a woman wears a flower behind:

Her right ear - she is single, available and looking

Her left ear - she is married, engaged or otherwise taken

I don't endorse the following:

Both ears - she is married but still available

Backward behind both ears - anything goes

Bora Bora - feeding frenzy

One of my favorite parts of traveling is the FOOD! Oh how I love thee.

So, my top pick for good grub is Bloody Mary's. It's definitely the most frequented by Americans while on the island. Picture a thatch roof, white sandy floor and "chairs" made of coconut stumps - it's a one-of-a-kind. They offer (and I recommend ordering) a "catch of the day" everyday execpt Sunday (think monkfish, tuna, swordfish, lobster, etc.). The proudly display it on ice when you enter and it's very fresh and delicious. It comes with salad, rice and vegetables - it's a done deal! I would also highly recommend trying a Bloody Mary - the house specialty. If it's not your thing, go for a margarita. :) Be sure to inquire at your hotel about complimentary dinner transportation, they offer that to several hotels. I must say - it is on the pricier side but definitely worth the experience. I would say dinner for two with drinks is going to run somewhere in the realm of $100-$150. But if you can, definitely stop in and check it out! **PS - some of the packages offered by travel companies include vouchers for Bloody Mary's so if you book a package, be sure to ask what they have available because it could be free!

Since I'm not one to pass up sweets, I would suggest a stop at L'Appetisserie in Vaitape (the village on the island). This great little pastry shop offers cakes, sorbet, ice cream, homemade croissants and quiches. It's delicious and under $10. Additionally, there are fruit stands in the village that are just what you would picture - locals with fresh fruit at a very reasonable price (think pineapple, mango, papaya and melon).

Inquire at your hotel about the shows they may offer. This can be a very fun island experience and they are usually pretty intimate since the resorts are typically somewhat small and not everyone goes to a show every night. They include dinner and sometimes they even give guests a taste of their 15 minutes of fame by bringing them up on stage to participate! :)

Bora Bora - rest your head

This week I've been researching all of the fantastic places to stay on the island - what a rough life! ;)

Here are my picks for "affordable" (and I put that in quotes since it's very relative) and a touch of luxury. There are many in between that would be great options but I figured these will help to separate the pack. Since I always travel on a budget, my focus will always be on the more affordable options but it is fun to explore what the other half experiences!

Low-end but still very nice, Le Maitai - I'd say it's about 3 stars or so. It's definitely the most affordable option on the island. The overwater bungalows (what Bora Bora is famous for) are around $650. If you aren't heart-set on staying out in the lagoon, then the island rooms at the hotel are only about $250. They also have a nice compromise - beach bungalows (about $475), they are right on the beach and offer great views. They are the next best thing to an overwater bungalow and can be a bit more private. Any of these will provide a beautiful view so it's just a matter of weighing the type of experience you want. Personally, I would go for one of the bungalows (probably the overwater) since it's one of those things that is so unique that it warrants the extra spending (make sure to research that they are - in fact over the water, some are half on the land and what's the fun in that?!). If you choose the bungalow option too, I would recommend looking into markets near your hotel to stock up on bread, cheese, fruit, etc. and make your own little picnics. You can splurge on a delicious dinner or relaxing massage and know that you aren't breaking the bank. Another point of note - alcohol is not cheap there! Depending on how thrifty you want to be, you may want to pick up alcohol before you leave to bring on your trip with you for drinking in your room and purchase mixers when you arrive. To give an idea, a bottle of Jack Daniels is about $20-$25 here and is around $65 there. A six-pack of beer is around $5 or so here - around $20 there. Just something to prepare for. :)

On the luxury side, I'd recommend Hotel Bora Bora. Although you can also choose from St. Regis, Starwood and Le Meridien...I really love the amenities and beauty of Hotel Bora Bora. Seeing as how it's the high-end pick, the rate for the over water bungalows is around $1100.

Personally, because I'm not in a position to spend a fortune on vacations but love the idea of experiencing new places - I'd go with Le Maitai...the way I look at it, the money saved can pay for even better meals, wine and fun excursions like a catamaran or water safari. :)

Bora Bora - get out

While many people enjoy lounging (I'm definitely like that on some vacations), I know others are excited to try new activities and I thought it would be helpful to look into as many options as possible to make sure everyone can have the best trip at their own speed. :)
Here's the main activities to choose from:

sun bathing (one of my personal faves) - try Matira Beach, it's the island's best sandy beach

scuba diving - best lagoon spots are Too Pua, Anau (good for spotting rays), Toopua Iti and Mute Motu (near the airport); best ocean spots are Tapu, Tipitipiti and Muri Muri

sailing - available for rent

snorkeling - the marine reserve at Hotel Bora Bora is great for snorkeling

windsurfing - quite a workout!

jet skiing - available for rent

waterskiing and wakeboarding - you'll need to rent a boat for these

swimming - if you are staying in an over water bungalow...just climb down the stairs outside your door and slip right into the water!

deep sea fishing - offering catches of marlin, wahoo, yellowfin, tuna, sailifish and mahi mahi

glass bottom boat tours - available to book through your hotel

safari mountain excursions and hiking - available to book through your hotel

parasailing - provides an incredible view of the lagoon

The list goes on...But the most popular activity is shark feeding. Many may be a little aprehensive with this but it's a long-standing tradition and thousands of tourists experience it there every year. It's actually a very interesting technique - the guides use a rope to tie off an area for the guests in the water. Sometimes they will tie it to the boat, sometimes they will use the coral in the water and other times they will use rocks. The guides will get into the water alone with a good amount of (bloody) fish and once the fish are thrown into the water, it's seconds until the sharks arrive. The guide will signal you to get in when he knows it is safe and you are able to stay behind that rope in the water keeping a safe distance from the sharks but still close enough to see all of the action. There are also some guides that encourage you to swim with the sharks following the feeding. Although this usually doesn't last long since the sharks will typically swim away once they realize the food is gone. :) Additionally during this session you are also able to swim with, feed and pet rays. These rays are VERY large but very gentle and enjoy human contact. They are used to having people in the water with them and look forward to these feeding sessions. Your guides have developed "relationships" with both the sharks and the rays so you should feel very comfortable - focus on the incredible stories you'll have to tell when you get home! PS - definitely buy or rent an underwater camera, you'll be amazed at the pictures!

Bora Bora - yes yes!

My latest obsession has been Bora Bora and all of the islands of Tahiti. How can anyone not want to see this in person?! So this month, I will explore all of the fantastic opportunities that are available on this island paradise and share my new-found secrets with you!

First off, if you are planning a trip - I would highly recommend booking a package. As anyone can tell this isn't the cheapest of choices and when booking a package, it's much easier to save money when items are purchased together instead of individually bought. A few companies that specialize in packages are Tahiti Legends , Tahiti Travel Planners and e-Tahiti Travel but make sure to do some research before committing, many companies run deals and specials depending on the time of year!

It's also important to note that most people making this trip are on honeymoons or couples-only vacations. Although there are many activities that families can enjoy together, it's not a typical destination for kids. Additionally, if you are young and looking for nightlife...probably not the best choice. Since it's such a small island, there's not enough people to support bars/clubs. Travelers looking for a vibrant nightlife might have better luck on the island of Tahiti since it's bigger and more populated.

Allow Me

So...after encouraging words from my co-worker Ann, I have decided to jump on board the internet superhighway and be one of the millions of people who blog. Thanks to anyone who happens to stumble across my page, hopefully it will be of some interest - what I'd like most is to make people laugh, smile, shake their head in agreement, scream out "finally someone who gets it!" or at least be a happy distraction, if just for a moment on a busy day...

Traveling is something that I have always loved since I was very little. I have had the pleasure and opportunity to go abroad several times and will be using this blog as a way to discuss any and all aspects of the travel world.
